- Challenge
Head Start of Greater Dallas (HSGD) is a publicly-supported provider of childcare, education, health and nutrition services, and other human services. It has roughly 500 employees across 20 centers and offices around the Dallas, Texas metro area. Busy centers and classrooms are a big workload for the caring people who work there. Like most organizations in the nonprofit and education spaces, this organization had continuing challenges in recruiting and retaining staff and teachers. - Solution
The Amazing Workplace Client Success Team kicked off work with HSGD by identifying the current conditions and goals at HSGD. After announcing the project, Amazing Workplace conducted an organization-wide Employee Happiness Survey.Results revealed that HSGD had a deep and uniquely passionate purpose-driven culture. People working there also expressed a lot of appreciation for the sense of cooperation and fun that they shared in their centers and classrooms. However, results also showed that employees were unhappy about some things, including a need for better communication, help coordinating support in sometimes stressful classrooms, and a need for clearer policy and onboarding processes.Amazing Workplace’s Client Success team developed a comprehensive action plan for HSGD, utilizing built-in action ideas from the AWP platform as well as custom plans to fit their unique needs. The team leveraged detailed results to target root causes of unhappy results in the most affected teams and locations. The action plan drew support from the HSGD’s strengths in purpose, mission, and culture to increase effectiveness. Advisory councils of teachers, staff, and administration teams formed to help roll out solutions to everyday issues at work.Most important of all, HSGD leadership openly and sincerely acknowledged the challenges the organization identified, and it committed to taking action to improve through specific actions.
Results/Impact
The client subsequently invited Amazing Workplace team members to give a detailed presentation on the results and action plans at the client’s annual all-staff retreat. The plan and results were very well received, bringing enthusiastic applause from the audience of teachers and staff. Amazing Workplace continues to partner with HSGD, committing to improving the workplace year after year.
